There is nothing a parent loves better than having teenagers who love to read. Unfortunately, a lot of what is out there is not really acceptable for all ages, so it is a parent beware kind of situation. Finding appropriate science fiction books for teens is not always as easy as it might sound, as so many books contain really unacceptable information for children.

There have been some vampire type stories which have come out over the years that are basically erotica novels. While a sixteen or seventeen year old might be at an age where this is okay reading material, a twelve or thirteen year old certainly is not. Reading reviews on some of these novels is probably a very good idea for parents with young teenagers.

Another element within this genre that parents must take into consideration is how much violence is too much. The fact is, there is always some element of violence in these stories, but reading about these things and seeing them on a television or movie screen are very different. A parent really has to come to their own conclusions about what level of violence their children are allowed to read.

There are series of stories which have come out in recent years which are geared towards young people. This does help parents get through the very murky water of what is or is not appropriate for their kids. Often such a book series can be found at their middle or elementary school libraries.

This leads us to another great way for parents to know that material is going to be age-appropriate. School librarians are well versed on the subject of what is acceptable for children to read, and they usually organize the school library based on age-appropriateness. It is when children are getting their material from book stores or public libraries that parents need to be more cautious.

Different families can have very differing views about what is regarded as appropriate as well. A religious family might not regard books about magic to be acceptable for any of their children. Even so, once their kids reach a certain age, attempting to control what they read becomes impossible, and quite possibly rather counter productive.

This is a trick that smart parents will use to actually encourage their children to read. Placing a particular series of books on a top shelf and stating that the material is not age appropriate guarantees that those stories will disappear at night. Something about human nature makes us always seek out that which is forbidden.

When it comes down to it, the only way to ensure what science fiction books for teens are going to be appropriate is for the parents to read it themselves. Rather than trusting outside sources like schools and churches, knowing what is in the material is just smart. A parent cannot really get upset about what their kids read if they haven’t taken it upon themselves to read it first.
